Bringing the windows off the surface of the cube makes it look much better.
Amusingly, the process that was taking up half a processor at a time was polling the processors and drawing their status. I'd imagine this would get worse with more processors; if you had 8 cores, drawing the graph could take up a whole processor all the time.
It would be funny if the cores available and cores required to draw the graph converged; there'd be a point at which your system wouldn't be able to System Monitor itself.
