Moved Offices

So now we're in our new offices. Hmm, let's see.
  • The phones no longer have international access
  • Email doesn't work
  • Network access initially didn't work (but now it's just slow)
  • There are 8 people working in a room about the size of a squash court.
I did, however, get a new rubbish bin. And I've finally scored a 20" LCD monitor.

Sounds like you moved out of the office and into hell.

I hate working when there's heaps of other people in the room, it almost makes me feel guilty about how much I slack off.

Congrats on the new rubbish bin.
And the monitor.
Justin
That comment about hell reminded me of Doom 3. Having vague flash-backs now. Something about coffee-tables with fake magazines on them.
Dominic
There's no ducktape on Mars.
Andrew
Because there are no ducks to make it out of?

Well I'm working on a construction site complete with concrete dust and a strange burning wood smell. I have to write software while wearing a hard hat. Your turn.
funkymunky
Extreme programming! Write code while hanging upside down over a pool of sharks!

Employer - "We find our software engineers work better under pressure. We decided sharks were the best way to do this."
Justin
I'll see you and raise you a 'our development database server went missing in the move and we're only now restoring a backup'.

Just remember I've got a whole stack of 'we haven't got any milk for coffee' in front of me.

I've started seeing Auckland graduates putting eXtreme Programming on their CVs. I wish it was as cool as it sounds.
Dominic
What the pluck is eXtreme Programming. It sounds gay.
funkymunky
Also known as 'agile development'. Look it up. It's very good.
darkclown
Looks like a lot of meaningless buzz words to me, which would make it ideal for mentioning on one's CV and not a lot else.
funkymunky
Actually, no. It contains a lot of useful practises and can improve the delivery time and quality of certain projects. Of course, it's not perfect for every situation, no methodology is.
darkclown
No extreme is only one possible type of agile from what I understand. And it's kinda void of any sort of practical meaning at UoA anyway.
Dominic
Yes, XP is one of the agile development methodologies. I was simplifying for the masses.

However it is a viable methodology for certain projects.

UoA?
darkclown
Oh, Auckland Uni. Ok. Are they saying it's crap?

That's a bit short sighted if they are. I've completed several projects using the methodology.
darkclown
No, for labs they double you up with people who can't speak English, let alone code. Then they pronounce it Extreme.
Dominic
Yes, well, when they double you up with people who can't speak english then that certainly is Extreme!
darkclown
Yes.... well..... let's just say a considerable portion of my job at the moment is ensuring that screenshots of the application I designed does not end up on www.engrish.com... so yeah I can appreciate the extremeness...
