Music Recommendation

Well since Alyx was kind enough to talk to us about the new Weezer album and her foray into the emo genre, I thought maybe I should share some info about one of my favourite metal bands. Stratovarius are a Finnish five-piece metal band that evolved from a 3-piece heavily influenced by Black Sabbath and Ozzy "FOOK OFF" Osbourne. They've released 12 studio albums since they formed in 1984, and if you listen in chronological order, the classical influence really starts coming through in the later albums. Fright Night sounds like a generic metal record, but the guitar solos and keyboards meld perfectly in the second album, "Twilight Time" aka Stratovarius II (original release). They released their last original recording in 2004, and I have to say that the combination of symphonic metal and slight folkish influences really do sound better with this band than their straight up metal records of the early 90s.

Ahem.

On that list, Puchu has S Club 7, Steps and the Spice Girls.
Alyx
Good thing you didn't see my *NSYNC discography!

(I like listening to all types of music, what can I say).
Puchu
I know what I can say.

Get that goddamn s--t off your computer!
Alyx
Oh come on I don't tell you to delete your Weezer collection now do I? Everyone has some sins when it comes to musical taste.
Puchu
That's because Weezer isn't commercially-generated s--t. The songs are written by somebody with a modicum of intelligence. The music is written by people who understand it, and it's released to those who enjoy it, not force-fed to those willing to listen to whatever the proverbial assembly line dishes out.
Alyx
Hahahahahahahaha get off your high horse alyx. If you seriously think that the people who write pop songs aren't intelligent, you're right off your rocker. These are people who write songs day in day out, and you dare to say that their experience and skill is worthless and lacking in intelligence? Preferring one genre of music over another is perfectly fine, and to be honest I'm not suprised that you and many others loathe pop music. Hearing "Wannabe" a thousand times isn't something many people can physically stand let alone enjoy. However, your telling me to "get that s--t off your computer" really hacks me off, because you seem to think that your opinion on what music is good should be universally applied to all and sundry. You're just acting like an elitist musical snob, purely because you can't appreciate that others may have differing tastes than you. I tried to make a news post that would maybe inform some visitors to this site about a band I enjoy listening to, because hey if I like it maybe there might be one person in a million who will say "yeah ok I'll give it a shot maybe it won't be terrible". Instead you just jump in and firstly a) critique my music collection with a snide remark that went off on a tangent rather than addressing the contents of my actual post and then b) demand that I conform to your musical tastes by deleting all that you didn't approve of from my hard drive. In fact, you even had a list in your first post saying which groups you looked down upon. How you could possibly think that you could get a gauge on my musical taste just by looking at the /S subdirectory I have no idea, but if you had even looked for more than a second you would have seen that the contents of that directory range from Stravinsky to Spice Girls to some weird record about how Spider-Man fought the Green Goblin and lost the love of his life in the process. How about next time you keep your immature little comments to yourself rather than impose your blathering assumptions upon other people.

Oh, and by the way: why don't you go look up "commercial" in the dictionary then find out which record label weezer is signed with.
Puchu
I'm all for appreciating other people's musical tastes. Hell - I listen to pretty varied music myself. But the extremely large majority of the music I listen to, is written by the musicians.

My point was merely that the Spice Girls, S Club 7 etc are cash cows. Or, were. They were a few of an entire generation of pop groups produced en masse for public enjoyment. They were the faces, not the talent.

I didn't demand that you conform to MY musical tastes. I made a statement, which was partially in jest.

I didn't gauge your musical interest, I made a comment on what I could see, nothing more. I didn't refer to ALL your music as s--t.

It was an objective discussion, which you've furthered stripped down to a personal attack.

Have a look around on SE. A little while ago there was a debate about what makes a band a sellout. There you'll find pretty much my opinion on music and genres etc.

I apologise to you for insulting your tastes, that was unfair and personal. I don't apologise for thinking that the only genre bands like S Club 7, and Steps can be categorised in is 's--t'.

And Dom, the Backstreet Boys suck compared to 5ive.
Alyx
Learn how to post. That, or convince me to fix the posting system.
Dominic
Or do neither.
Alyx
Troll!

They're signed to Geffen, which didn't use to be regarded as the most commercial of labels - but yeah, it's owned by Interscope, which is owned by Universal.

Actually, Weezer are one of the only bands that have their s--t together and aren't being rammed up the ass by their record company. Rivers did some legal rangling back when Maladroit was released - doing their own distribution and managing to cut the record company out of the loop. I seem to recall the situation was something like Weezer hadn't turned the album over to Geffen when the first single was already in playlists, meaning they had a pretty good hand to negotiate with.

And yes, get with it Alyx.

And Backstreet Boys > S Club 7. Scroll up already!
Dominic
And she's just getting into emo, a genre known for its atrocities against humanity.
Dominic
What atrocities against humanity?
Alyx
Screamo for one. Also, the music that results when people who can't sing decide to and an emo label gives them a recording studio to cry in.

I consider both to be acts of war.
Dominic
They are.

But it is amusing listening to them scream.

..Their lives are so useless. Slit my wrists and cry. Etcetra etcetera etcetera.

Some of the lyrics are kind of cool. And if they had singers that could *sing* they'd sound halfway decent.
Alyx
pluck it all
pluck this world
pluck everything that you stand for
Don't belong
Don't exist
Don't give a s--t
Don't ever judge me

Lovely words from slipknot.
